Jean Marie is a 1982 Fast Passage 39 designed by William Garden and built by Tollycraft in the state of Washington. There are only 40 or so in existence, originally built by Philbrooks in Sydney, BC. They are proven passage-makers and decent performers, often compared to the Valiant 40, with many features I considered essential for a cruising boat: long fin keel, skeg-hung rudder, keel-stepped mast, and cutter rig.
In 1982 Francis Stokes sailed a Fast Passage 39 in the first BOC challenge -- a singlehanded round-the-world race -- finishing second in class. After reading his book "The Moonshine Logs" I put the FP 39 at the top of my short list of desired cruising boats. It wasn't on the list long.

It was 2005 and I had spent the previous 6 years completely refitting my first sailboat, a 1984 Ericson 30+. I really loved my little Ericson and could be found nearly every weekend either sailing or working on the boat. I started racing her the year before in the South Bay YRA and was really looking forward to honing our skills for the upcoming season. That all came to a screeching halt the day I spotted an ad for Jean Marie in the classified section of Latitude 38.
Like me, the previous owner of Jean Marie loved his boat and spent countless hours working on her until just about every system had been upgraded. He owned property in eastern Washington and shipped the boat home where he built a large shed over her and went to work, replacing many of the aging or out-dated components, improving many others, and preparing the boat for single-handed offshore sailing. He spent 8 years refitting and sailing her, taking the boat around Vancouver Island, down to Mexico and then back up the coast before deciding (relunctantly) to let her go.
I remember seeing her for the first time and thinking she certainly doesn't look like a 23-year-old boat. After 6 years of refitting my Ericson I was not looking for a project boat, and Jean Marie seemed a perfect fit. I knew I wouldn't come across another Fast Passage like that any time soon. It was a difficult decision to sell the Ericson, but I knew the time had come.
Jean Marie was berthed in Blaine, WA on the border with Canada. Around the same time I was working out the purchase and preparing to sail her down the coast I got a call from a couple in Vancouver who were interested in the Ericson. A few weeks after Jean Marie departed the Puget Sound for the Bay Area my beloved Ericson was loaded on a truck headed for Vancouver Island. I was sorry to see her go but looked forward to the opportunity that lay ahead. The boat I dreamed of was now mine.
